What we did

Synergy Lifting were first approached by the NE Maritime Trust to help plan offloading and shifting a 136-year-old life boat, The Bedford, and her carriage into their workshop at South Shields to enable them to carry out restoration works.

When the restoration works were completed, Synergy Lifting returned to shift The Bedford and her carriage back outside and onto transport. We then transported her to a local storage unit for safekeeping and hopefully one day go on display for other people to see too.

The Bedford is 33 feet long, 11 feet wide, and weighs 3.7 tonnes. She was in service in South Shields from 1887 and she was launched on 52 occasions and saved 49 lives. The history behind this lifeboat and the effort put into restoration by the NE Maritime Trust arguably make this a priceless piece.

How we did it

Plant and Equipment

The NE Maritime Trust restoration workshop was tight on space for access and setting up the crane to carry out these works. There were also overhead cables to contend with too. We utilised a 50te mobile crane to offload The Bedford and her carriage from an artic flatbed and land her in front of the restoration workshop doors. We then shifted her inside into the restoration workshop for the NE Maritime Trust team to carry out their incredible work.

When she was fully restored we returned to repeat this operation in reverse. We then transported her to a local storage unit and again offloaded her and shifted her inside.

Labour

One of our appointed persons planned these lifting operations well in advance. This careful planning meant no issues were encountered during the lifting and transportation operations.

On the day of the operations, we provided a competent crane operator, lift supervisor, slinger signaller, and additional rigger. The team successfully carried out loading and offloading operations as well as ingress and egress operations too.
